# Chania in April: What It’s Actually Like
April is one of those months where Chania genuinely delivers without the chaos that makes the Old Town feel like a cruise ship staging area in summer. The temperature sitting around 20 or 21 degrees is honestly ideal for actually doing things rather than melting on a sunbed questioning your choices.
That 30mm of rain is real but don’t catastrophise it. You’re not looking at grey drizzle all week. It typically comes in sharp bursts, clears quickly, and leaves everything smelling incredible. The mountains behind the city still have snow on their peaks while the wildflowers are going absolutely berserk in the valleys. It looks almost theatrical and it’s not staged for anyone.
Crowds are thin by summer standards but not empty. Easter brings a significant spike if it falls in April that year, and Greek Easter especially draws domestic visitors who treat Chania extremely well as a destination. Outside of that period you can walk the Venetian harbour at dusk and actually stop moving without someone bumping into you. Restaurants are open and genuinely pleased to see you. Nobody is going through the motions yet.
Most things are operating. The Archaeological Museum is open, boat trips to Balos and Gramvousa are starting to run though check schedules as they build up gradually through the month. The Samaria Gorge may still be closed early April depending on conditions but typically opens mid-month. Worth checking before you plan your entire trip around it.
Is it worth going? For couples, solo travellers, hikers, people who actually want to eat well and explore rather than survive a beach holiday, yes absolutely. Families wanting guaranteed beach swimming might find the sea temperature a touch cold for younger kids, hovering around 17 degrees.
**Practical tip:** Book accommodation in the Old Town itself rather than the outskirts. In summer this feels loud and premium-priced for the privilege. In April it just means you roll out of bed into the best part of the city without needing a plan.
