# Chania in June: What It’s Actually Like
June is probably the sweet spot for Chania before everything gets genuinely overwhelming. The temperature sits around 30°C, which sounds intense on paper but usually comes with a decent breeze off the water that makes it feel far more manageable than, say, August when the heat just sits on you like a wet blanket. You’ll get 10mm of rain across the whole month, so essentially nothing. Pack a light layer for evenings, forget the umbrella entirely.
The old town is busy but not suffocating yet. You can still walk through the Venetian harbour in the morning without pressing yourself against strangers, find a taverna table without a reservation on a Tuesday, and actually look at the lighthouse without forty people standing in front of it. By July that changes considerably. If you have any flexibility in your schedule and you’re genuinely interested in wandering, eating well, and seeing the place rather than surviving it, June earns its reputation.
Everything is open. All the boat trips, the beaches at Balos and Elafonissi, the restaurants, the archaeological museum. You’re not arriving to find half the island still shaking off winter. The water temperature is around 23°C, which is warm enough that most people find it perfectly swimmable, though if you need Mediterranean bathwater temperatures you might find it slightly refreshing rather than warm.
June suits couples, people travelling solo, and anyone who finds crowds genuinely draining. Families with young kids do fine here too, though those beach excursions to Balos involve some effort. It’s less ideal if you’re coming specifically for nightlife and want that peak-season electric atmosphere, because that really arrives in July and August with the numbers to sustain it.
**One practical tip:** Go to Balos or Elafonissi on a weekday and leave before noon. Both get tour buses arriving mid-morning and the difference between 8am and 11am at either beach is the difference between paradise and a car park with sand. Your rental car is worth every cent for this exact reason.
