Visiting Tenerife in March
# Tenerife in March: What It’s Actually Like
March sits in that slightly awkward in-between period for Tenerife where you genuinely cannot promise someone sunshine and feel confident about it. The south of the island – around Playa de las Américas and Los Cristianos – tends to behave itself, with temperatures hovering around 20-22°C and plenty of dry, pleasant days. The north, including Puerto de la Cruz and the Anaga region, is a different story. It can be genuinely grey and damp up there, sometimes for days at a stretch. That’s just the island’s geography doing its thing.
Rainfall is legitimately unpredictable in March. You might get a couple of scattered showers or you might get a week of overcast skies with actual proper rain. It’s not monsoon territory, but it’s not guaranteed beach weather either. Pack a light waterproof and mentally prepare yourself.
Crowds are moderate and honestly quite manageable. The Christmas and New Year rush is well over, and the peak summer chaos hasn’t arrived yet. You’ll share beaches and restaurants with mostly northern Europeans escaping grey winters, plus some Spanish visitors. It feels like a real place rather than a theme park, which is refreshing.
Everything is open. This isn’t somewhere that hibernates in winter – Tenerife runs pretty much year-round. Restaurants, water parks, boat trips, the cable car up Teide (weather and wind permitting, always check), all accessible.
Is it worth going? Yes, particularly if you’re someone who finds July and August oppressive and overpriced, or if you just want a quiet week without fighting for a sun lounger. It suits people who care more about hiking, exploring and eating well than guaranteed beach days. Families with young kids often find March lovely precisely because it’s relaxed and affordable.
**One practical tip:** If Teide is on your list, book the cable car in advance and check the forecast the day before. It closes regularly due to wind and you’ll kick yourself if you’ve built a day around it without a backup plan.
