# Chios in July: What It’s Actually Like

Look, July in Chios is hot. We’re talking Greek island summer hot, so expect temperatures regularly pushing into the low-to-mid thirties Celsius with strong sunshine and very little rain. The Aegean keeps things marginally more bearable than the Greek mainland, and the island typically catches decent meltemi winds that can make afternoons feel almost pleasant rather than suffocating. Almost.

## What You’re Actually Walking Into

Chios is genuinely one of the less touristy major Greek islands, and that’s both its charm and its occasional frustration. July brings visitors, but not the absolute chaos of Mykonos or Santorini. You’ll find beaches reasonably busy on weekends, particularly around Karfas and Mavra Volia, but nothing that’ll make you want to weep. The medieval villages in the mastic-growing south, places like Pyrgi and Mesta, stay relatively quiet even in peak summer, which feels almost miraculous.

Everything is open in July. Restaurants, boat trips, the mastic museum, the Byzantine museum in town. Ferry connections to nearby islands like Psara and Oinousses run regularly. This is genuinely one of the best windows to explore the whole island without anything being shuttered.

## Is It Worth It?

If you like heat, swimming, and eating extraordinarily good food without feeling like a sardine, yes. Chios rewards curious travellers who care more about authenticity than Instagram moments. The mastic products are everywhere in summer, the seafood is excellent, and the locals are noticeably warmer toward visitors than on the more overtouristed islands simply because they’re not completely exhausted by tourist volume.

If you hate heat and burn easily, maybe reconsider or at least arrive with realistic expectations about midday.

## One Practical Tip

Rent a car. Seriously, do it immediately when you arrive. Public transport on Chios is limited and unpredictable, and the best beaches, villages, and viewpoints are scattered across an island that doesn’t apologise for its geography. Without wheels, you’ll see a fraction of what makes this place special.
