Visiting Durres in May
# Visiting Durrës in May
May is genuinely one of the better times to show up in Durrës, and I’d say that even accounting for the fact that it’s still a bit of a lottery weather-wise.
Temperatures are typically sitting somewhere in the low-to-mid twenties Celsius, which is comfortable rather than roasting. You might get a perfect week of sunshine, or you might get a few days of overcast skies and the occasional shower — Albania’s Adriatic coast doesn’t follow a neat script in spring, and rainfall in May can be surprisingly variable. Pack a light layer and something waterproof and just accept that. The sea is swimmable for the hardy, though most people are still only paddling.
What May does well is give you the city before it becomes a different place entirely. By July, Durrës is absolutely packed with Albanian diaspora returning from Italy and Germany, domestic tourists, and a growing number of foreign visitors. The beachfront promenade gets loud and chaotic in the best and worst senses. In May, none of that has fully kicked in yet. Restaurants are open and actually trying to impress you rather than just processing tables. The Roman amphitheatre, one of the largest in the Balkans and absurdly underrated, is easy to visit without fighting through groups.
Is it worth it? For a beach holiday, honestly, probably wait until June if guaranteed sun matters to you. But if you’re someone who likes poking around a city with actual history, eating well, and not feeling like you’re in a tourist production line, May suits you well. The old bazaar area, the archaeological museum, and the general scrappy energy of the seafront are all accessible without the crush.
One practical tip: the beach bars and sunbed rental operations are open but operating on reduced hours and a slightly “we’ll see how today goes” schedule. Don’t plan your day tightly around them. Walk in the old city in the morning, see what’s happening at the water in the afternoon, and you’ll be fine.
