Visiting Elounda in May

# Elounda in May: What It’s Actually Like

May is one of those months in Elounda where you feel like you’ve caught the place before it fully wakes up, which is either exactly what you want or mildly frustrating depending on why you’re there.

**The weather is genuinely good but not guaranteed.** Early May can still throw cool evenings and the occasional grey day at you. The sea temperature is around 18-20°C, which is swimmable if you’re not precious about it but will feel cold to anyone expecting Mediterranean bath-water warmth. By late May things settle into something more reliably sunny, with temperatures hitting the mid-20s most days. Rain is possible, particularly in the first two weeks. Pack a light layer and don’t assume it’ll be wall-to-wall sunshine from day one.

**Crowds are refreshingly manageable.** The enormous floating hotel that is the Spinalonga tourist boat still runs, but you won’t be shuffling shoulder-to-shoulder. The waterfront tavernas are open and calm, you can actually get a table, and the staff have time to talk to you. This changes dramatically in June.

**Most things are open, but not everything.** The big resort hotels around Elounda are coming to life through May, though some smaller places open mid-month rather than at the start. Check directly before booking if you have somewhere specific in mind. Water sports and boat hire are patchier early in the month.

**Is it worth it?** Honestly, yes — for the right person. If you want to walk the path above the gulf without sweating, sit at a waterfront table without competing for it, and visit Spinalonga without it feeling like a theme park, May works beautifully. Couples, solo travellers, people who actually want to eat fresh fish and think rather than party: this is your month. Families wanting guaranteed beach weather and full resort facilities might find late May marginally anxious.

**Practical tip:** Book Spinalonga boat tickets in advance anyway. It’s not heaving, but the smaller operators fill their morning slots faster than you’d expect.
