# Formentera in April: Honest Thoughts
April sits in that interesting middle ground where Formentera is genuinely lovely but also genuinely uncertain, and whether you’ll love it depends almost entirely on what you’re after.
The weather is mild rather than warm. Seventeen and a half degrees sounds reasonable on paper, but factor in a decent breeze off the water and you’ll want a jacket most evenings and probably a light layer during the day. The sea is cold — nobody’s swimming comfortably yet unless they’re the type who considers that a point of pride. Don’t arrive expecting beach days in a bikini because you’ll be miserable and slightly embarrassed.
What you get instead is the island feeling almost like it belongs to you. The tourist infrastructure hasn’t fully cranked up yet, so you’ll encounter a version of Formentera that residents actually recognise. The main drag in Sant Francesc has some life, a handful of restaurants are open and serving properly, and the natural park trails are genuinely spectacular without another soul interrupting the silence. The water colour, even in April, is absurd — that impossible turquoise doesn’t care what season it is.
Crowds are minimal. You’ll share Es Caló and Ses Illetes with almost nobody, which is remarkable given how shoulder-to-shoulder those spots become by June. That alone is worth something significant.
The roughly 28mm of rain across the month means you should expect several grey days and the occasional proper shower. It won’t ruin a week but it’ll interrupt it. Evenings can feel slightly dead if you’re chasing nightlife — many bars and restaurants are still on reduced hours or closed entirely.
April Formentera suits walkers, cyclists, couples wanting quiet, photographers, and anyone who finds crowded Mediterranean beaches actively unpleasant. It doesn’t suit sun-worshippers, party-seekers, or families expecting full resort-mode operation.
**Practical tip:** Rent a bicycle before 9am. The handful of rental places open in April have limited stock, and by mid-morning on a dry day, the decent bikes are gone and you’re left negotiating with something that has one working gear.
Worth it for the right person? Absolutely yes.
