# Mdina in December: What It’s Actually Like
Mdina in December is genuinely one of those travel experiences that can go either way depending entirely on your personality and what you’re after.
The weather sits at a mild 15.6°C, which sounds pleasant until you factor in that 56.4mm of rain falls across the month, often in short, heavy bursts rather than persistent drizzle. The narrow limestone streets between those high honey-coloured walls create a wind tunnel effect when the Gregale blows in from the northeast, and it can feel significantly colder than the thermometer suggests. Pack a proper jacket, not just a light layer.
The upside is the crowds, or rather the lack of them. Mdina is already a small place with perhaps 300 residents and a handful of streets, but in summer it can feel genuinely claustrophobic with tour groups shuffling through gate to gate. In December you can actually stand in Piazza San Publiju without someone’s selfie stick in your peripheral vision. You can linger. You can hear your own footsteps on the stone. For a medieval walled city, that silence is the whole point.
Most things remain open. The Cathedral, the Palazzo Falson, St. Paul’s Cathedral Museum, the dungeons attraction – all operating. Some of the smaller cafes keep reduced hours or close midweek, so don’t count on a late lunch everywhere. The Cathedral is particularly striking in December with low winter light hitting the interior differently than summer photographs suggest.
Is it worth visiting? For photographers, history enthusiasts, or anyone who genuinely wants to absorb atmosphere rather than tick a box, absolutely yes. For families with young children expecting sunshine and outdoor energy, probably manage expectations first.
The one practical tip: visit in the late afternoon rather than midmorning. Most of the organised tours from Valletta and the resort areas come through between 10am and 1pm. Arrive around 3pm, when tour buses have gone and that extraordinary winter golden hour starts hitting the limestone walls, and you’ll have the Silent City living up to its name.
