Visiting Girona in June
# Girona in June: What to Actually Expect
June is genuinely one of the better months to visit Girona, though I’d caveat that with some honesty about what you’re signing up for.
The weather sits in that pleasant sweet spot before summer turns brutal. Early June runs roughly 20-25°C most days, warm enough to walk the old city walls comfortably and sit outside without a jacket by evening. Late June starts pushing higher, sometimes hitting 30°C, and the humidity can make the narrow medieval streets feel noticeably close. Rainfall is genuinely unpredictable – June sees occasional thunderstorms, usually dramatic afternoon affairs that roll in fast and clear quickly. Pack a light layer and don’t let a threatening sky ruin your morning plans.
Crowds are building but haven’t peaked yet. The city gets genuinely packed in July and August, so June feels comparatively manageable. That said, the colourful houses along the Onyar, the cathedral steps, and the Jewish Quarter are popular spots – you’ll share them with other visitors, particularly on weekends when Barcelona day-trippers arrive in numbers. Girona is only 38 minutes from Barcelona by fast train, which makes it extremely accessible and means weekday visits feel considerably calmer.
Everything is open. Restaurants, the Arab Baths, the cathedral, the city history museum – June is full operation across the board. The famous Temps de Flors flower festival typically falls in May, so you’ll miss that specifically, but the city doesn’t require it to be worth visiting.
Is it worth it? For most people, genuinely yes. Girona rewards visitors who want a medieval city that still functions as a real place where people actually live, eat, and argue about parking. It’s smaller and less performative than many tourist destinations its size. Families, solo travellers, couples who’ve already done Barcelona – all find something here.
**One practical tip:** Visit the cathedral in the morning when the light comes through the nave properly. The afternoon crowds are heavier and the heat inside builds significantly. Get there by 10am and you’ll have a noticeably better experience.
