# Gozo in May: Quietly Good
May is honestly one of the better times to visit Gozo, and most people don’t realise it yet, which is partly what makes it work.
The weather sits around 18-19°C, which sounds modest until you’re actually there. You’ll be comfortable walking the coastal paths to Wied il-Mielaħ or climbing around Ġgantija without sweating through your clothes by 10am. Evenings need a light layer, but you’re eating outside comfortably, which matters more than people admit. There’s some rain – around 8mm spread across the month – so maybe one slightly grey afternoon where you eat too much pastizzi and call it culture. Nothing that ruins a trip.
Crowds are genuinely manageable. The Easter rush has cleared, the full summer onslaught hasn’t arrived. Xlendi and Marsalforn still feel like places locals actually use. You can get a table at a decent restaurant without booking three days ahead. The ferry from Malta has queues but not the soul-destroying kind.
Everything is open, which isn’t always guaranteed in shoulder season. Boat trips, the Azure Window site at Dwejra (yes, worth going even without the arch – the geology is still dramatic), the Citadel, most restaurants. The sea is around 18°C, so swimming is for the enthusiastic rather than the casual, but plenty of people do it.
Who is it actually good for? Couples, solo travellers, anyone who likes walking or photography, people who find July Gozo overwhelming and overpriced. Families with young kids might find the cooler water disappointing. Beach holiday purists should wait until June at minimum.
Who should skip it? Anyone whose entire trip revolves around lying in the sea for eight hours. You’ll be slightly cold and slightly sad.
**One practical tip:** hire a car, not just for a day but for your whole stay. The bus system exists but Gozo is small enough that having wheels changes everything – you’ll reach villages and viewpoints that most visitors never bother with, and the roads are quiet enough in May to make it genuinely enjoyable.
