# Gozo in October: The Honest Version
October is genuinely one of the better months to visit Gozo, but not for the reasons you might expect.
The temperature sits around 23°C, which sounds perfect on paper, and mostly it is. You’re not sweating through every shirt you own like you would in August, and you can actually walk uphill to a clifftop without needing a lie-down afterwards. The sea is still warm from the summer, hovering around 24°C, so swimming is absolutely still on the table. Bring a light jacket though, because evenings cool down noticeably and that 73mm of rain has to fall somewhere. You’ll likely get a few proper rainy days rather than constant drizzle, so just factor that in rather than being blindsided by it.
The crowds drop off sharply after mid-September, and by October Gozo feels like itself again. Locals reclaim the restaurants. You can actually park near Xlendi or Marsalforn without a small miracle. The ferry from Malta still runs constantly, but you won’t be queuing for an hour in direct sun.
Most things stay open, though some smaller beach bars and tourist-facing places start reducing hours or closing weekends-only. The main restaurants, the Azure Window area at Dwejra, the Citadel in Victoria, the salt pans at Xwejni – all fully accessible and significantly more enjoyable without summer’s crowds pressing in around you.
October suits you particularly well if you’re into walking, photography, diving, or just wanting to sit somewhere genuinely beautiful without performing tourism. It’s less suited to people who need guaranteed beach weather every single day or want a buzzing nightlife scene – Gozo never really does that anyway, but October is quieter still.
Is it worth it? Yes, honestly more so than July or August for most people over 30 who’ve graduated from needing chaos on holiday.
**Practical tip:** Book your hire car before you arrive. October visitors are often last-minute decision-makers and the small local fleet gets snapped up faster than you’d think.
