# Sagres in September: What It’s Actually Like
September is honestly one of the better times to visit Sagres, and I say that as someone who’s been there in the absolute madness of July too.
The weather sits around 25-26°C, which sounds modest compared to peak summer but feels genuinely perfect for actually doing things. You’re not pinned to the shade between noon and four. You can walk the cliffs at Cabo de São Vicente without feeling like you’re melting into the path. That constant Atlantic wind that defines the place keeps everything comfortable rather than oppressive. The 20mm of rain sounds alarming but it basically means one grey afternoon where you drink coffee and watch surfers ignore the conditions. The rest of the time the light is extraordinary, that golden, slightly hazy quality that makes everything look better than it deserves to.
Crowds drop noticeably after the first week of September. The Portuguese and Spanish summer holidays wrap up, and suddenly you can get a table at restaurants without the whole negotiation process. The fort at Ponta de Sagres, which in August feels like a theme park, becomes something you can actually stand in and absorb. You’ll still see people, it’s not empty, but it shifts back towards being a place rather than an event.
Everything stays open throughout September. Restaurants, surf schools, boat trips along the coast. The surf scene picks up momentum actually, as Atlantic swells start arriving more consistently, so if that’s your reason for being there you’re in good shape.
Is it worth visiting in September? Yes, particularly if you care about hiking the coastal paths, surfing, or just existing somewhere spectacular without constantly managing around other people. It suits independent travellers, couples, anyone who finds August crowds exhausting. Families with school-age kids obviously lose the option but those without have hit a sweet spot.
**Practical tip:** Book accommodation anyway. Sagres doesn’t have infinite beds and September still pulls surfers and older travellers specifically because they know what I’ve just told you.
