Let’s be straight about the weather first: Granada in December is genuinely unpredictable. The city sits at altitude in the shadow of the Sierra Nevada, which means it can be crisp and sunny one day and bitterly cold the next. You’re looking at temperatures that can drop to near freezing at night, occasionally dipping below. Rain is possible, sometimes persistent, and if you’re unlucky you might get actual snow in the city itself. Pack accordingly and don’t book assuming blue skies.

That said, here’s what December actually delivers that summer can’t.

The Alhambra is yours. Not literally, obviously – you still need to book in advance – but compared to the shoulder-crushing queues of July and August, the palace complex feels almost contemplative. You can actually stop and look at things. The light in winter is lower and softer, and seeing the Nasrid Palaces without sweating through your shirt while being funnelled like cattle is genuinely transformative. It’s one of the great buildings in the world and December might be the most honest way to experience it.

The city itself stays surprisingly lively. Granada has a large student population who don’t evaporate in winter, so the tapas bars around Calle Elvira and the Albaicín stay animated. The free tapas culture absolutely still operates – order a drink, get food, this tradition does not take a holiday. Christmas decorations go up early and the centre has a slightly festive energy without being overwhelmed by markets.

The Albaicín neighbourhood, Granada’s old Moorish quarter, is genuinely atmospheric when it’s quiet and cool. Walking those narrow streets with wood smoke in the air and views up to the Alhambra feels earned rather than touristy.

Who should visit in December? Anyone who prioritises actually experiencing something over photographing themselves in front of it. Solo travellers, couples, architecture obsessives, people who find summer crowds exhausting.

**Practical tip:** Book Alhambra tickets the moment your trip is confirmed. December is quieter, but they still sell out weeks ahead. Don’t gamble on this.
