# Menton in August: What It’s Actually Like
Let’s be straight with you: August in Menton is hot, busy, and absolutely gorgeous if you know what you’re signing up for.
That 24°C average sounds civilised, but it’s the Mediterranean coast in peak summer, so expect plenty of days pushing into the low 30s, strong sun, and that particular sticky warmth that makes you genuinely grateful for air conditioning. The 5mm of rainfall means you’ll almost certainly see zero rain the entire trip. Maybe one brief dramatic thunderstorm if you’re lucky. Pack for relentless sunshine and you’ll be right.
The crowds are real. Menton draws slightly fewer visitors than Nice or Cannes, which is part of its charm, but August still fills the old town with people, the Marché du Midi gets shoulder-to-shoulder by mid-morning, and the pebbly beaches are genuinely packed by 10am. The town has a quieter, more Italian character than other Riviera spots – it sits basically on the border – and that atmosphere survives the summer crowds better than most places nearby.
Everything is open. Restaurants, the lemon-grove gardens at Palais Carnolès, the remarkable cemetery with its sea views, the old town churches, day trips across into Ventimiglia for the Friday market. This is peak season, so you get full services and long opening hours.
Is it worth it? For families with school-age kids who have no choice about timing, absolutely yes – the sheltered bay, calm water, and compact walkable town make it genuinely manageable. For couples or solo travellers with flexibility, honestly consider late September instead: quieter, cheaper, still warm, and the light turns beautiful.
But if August is your window, Menton remains one of the more human-scale towns on this stretch of coast. It doesn’t try quite as hard to impress you.
**Practical tip:** Get to the beach before 9am. Seriously. By half nine the good spots near the old town are gone, and you’ll spend your morning negotiating for a patch of pebble. Early birds genuinely win here.
