# Himarë in April: Honest Take

April is genuinely one of the more interesting times to visit Himarë, though probably not for the reasons that would appear in a brochure.

The weather sits at a comfortable 18°C on average, which sounds ideal until you factor in that 30mm of rain spread across the month means you’ll almost certainly catch at least one grey, drizzly day. It’s not relentless – more like unpredictable. You’ll get a brilliant sunny morning where the Ionian looks impossibly blue, then clouds roll in from the mountains by afternoon. Pack a light waterproof and stop stressing about it.

The crowds situation is the actual reason to consider April. The Albanian Riviera in July and August is a completely different animal – packed, loud, prices inflated. In April you’re largely walking around a town that belongs to locals. The beach is yours. You can stand on Spile or Livadh and genuinely feel alone, which is a rare thing on any Mediterranean coast. It’s atmospheric rather than dead – people are around, fishermen are working, the old castle neighbourhood feels lived-in rather than performative.

The honest caveat about what’s open: expect some restaurants and accommodation options to still be shuttered or running reduced hours. Owners are preparing for the season but haven’t fully committed yet. You won’t struggle to eat or sleep, but your choice is narrower. The better-established places tend to be open; the seasonal beach bars probably aren’t.

Is it worth visiting? If you want swimming and nightlife, wait until June at the earliest. The water temperature in April is still pretty cold – refreshing is the diplomatic word. But if you’re a hiker, a photographer, someone who finds off-season coastal towns genuinely moving, or you’re combining this with exploring the wider Albanian south, April works really well. The mountains behind town still have drama to them, the light is beautiful, and you’ll have space to actually see the place.

**Practical tip:** Book accommodation in advance even in April. The open options are fewer, so the good ones fill up faster than you’d expect for a quiet month.
