Visiting Himarë in March

Weather in March: Average high 14.3°C, 45mm rainfall.

# Himarë in March: Honest Thoughts

Look, March in Himarë is not the Instagram version of the Albanian Riviera. The beaches are empty, the tavernas serving grilled fish with your feet in the sand are mostly shuttered, and that famous turquoise water is absolutely freezing. At 14 degrees, you’re not swimming. Let’s just get that out of the way immediately.

What you actually get is something quieter and, depending on your personality, genuinely better. The town feels like itself. The old Greek-Albanian village up on the hill is atmospheric rather than crowded, the citadel ruins reward a slow wander without anyone elbowing past you, and the views down to the coast on a clear day are legitimately stunning. Some days will be clear. Some will be grey and drizzly — 45mm across the month means you’ll probably catch a few wet afternoons, so pack a layer and accept that.

Crowds are essentially nonexistent. You can drive the coastal road and pull over wherever you want without navigating tour buses. Accommodation is cheap and available, locals are unhurried and more likely to actually talk to you, and the whole place operates at a pace that peak summer completely destroys.

What’s open is patchy. Some family-run restaurants stay open year-round, a few guesthouses remain operational, and you can find basics easily enough. But don’t arrive expecting full resort services. Verify before you book that your specific place is actually running in March.

**Is it worth it?** For hikers, photographers, slow travellers, or anyone wanting the bones of a beautiful place without the noise — genuinely yes. For anyone whose holiday requires beach days, cocktails by the water, and buzzing nightlife — honestly, wait until June.

**One practical tip:** Rent a car. Public transport along this stretch thins out dramatically in low season, taxis are scarce, and the whole coastline between Himarë and Sarandë becomes properly accessible only on your own schedule. Without wheels in March, you’ll feel stranded rather than pleasantly isolated.

It’s a shoulder-season destination that actually rewards the right kind of traveller.
