# Hurghada in May: What It’s Actually Like

Let’s be straight with you: May is when Hurghada starts getting genuinely hot. We’re talking daytime temperatures regularly hitting 35-38°C, sometimes nudging higher, with very little cloud cover and almost zero rainfall. The Red Sea doesn’t care about your comfort levels. By midday, the beach feels less like relaxation and more like slow-cooking yourself on a stone.

That said, the sea temperature is absolutely glorious in May – warm enough to snorkel for hours without feeling cold, clear enough that visibility underwater stays excellent. If you’re coming specifically to dive or snorkel, the conditions are honestly hard to beat.

Crowd-wise, May sits in an interesting gap. European school holidays haven’t fully kicked in yet, so you’re largely avoiding the summer crush of families. Russian and Eastern European tourists remain a constant presence year-round in Hurghada, so don’t expect empty resorts, but it’s noticeably calmer than July or August. You’ll get sun loungers without the 6am towel warfare.

Everything is open. This isn’t a seasonal resort town that shuts down in shoulder months. All the boat trips, diving centres, desert excursions, and resort facilities run normally. Prices are also somewhat softer than peak summer, which is a genuine bonus.

Is it worth visiting? Honestly, it depends entirely on you. If you’re heat-sensitive, May is already pushing into uncomfortable territory for anyone wanting to sightsee or walk around town. The stretch between noon and 4pm is basically write-off time unless you’re in air conditioning or water. But if your holiday plan is genuinely pool, sea, snorkel, eat, repeat – with early morning activity and afternoon hiding indoors – May works perfectly well and costs you less than the busy months.

It suits couples without school-age kids, divers chasing good visibility, and budget-conscious travellers who can handle serious sunshine.

**Practical tip:** Book a hotel where your room faces away from the afternoon sun. West-facing rooms in May turn into actual ovens, and no pool makes up for sleeping in a radiator.
