# Ios in March: Quiet, Slightly Uncertain, Honestly Quite Nice

Let me be straight with you: March in Ios is a gamble, and whether that gamble pays off depends entirely on what you’re looking for.

The weather is genuinely unpredictable. You might get crisp, sunny days where the light on the Cycladic whitewash is absolutely stunning and you’re comfortable in a light jacket. You might also get grey skies, wind, and enough rain to make you wish you’d waited six weeks. The Aegean hasn’t warmed up yet, so swimming is off the table for most people unless you run cold. Pack layers and manage your expectations accordingly.

What you won’t get is crowds. Ios in summer is notorious — it attracts a younger party crowd, the village fills up, and the beaches get genuinely busy. In March, almost all of that evaporates. You’ll walk through Chora and feel like you have the whole place to yourself, which is either magical or slightly melancholy depending on your mood.

The catch is that a lot of businesses simply won’t be open yet. Many restaurants, bars, and shops stay closed until Easter at the earliest, sometimes later. You’ll find enough to eat and drink, but don’t expect the full range of options. Some accommodation will be shut too, so book early to confirm places are actually operating.

What is worth doing: walking. The hiking on Ios is genuinely underrated, and March is a lovely time for it before the heat arrives. The hills are green, wildflowers are starting to appear, and the paths around the island feel completely your own. The village itself is beautiful when it’s not heaving.

Is it worth going? If you want beaches and nightlife, honestly no — wait until at least June. But if you want somewhere quietly beautiful to walk, read, eat well (when you find somewhere open), and feel like you’ve discovered something rather than consumed it, March has real appeal. It suits slower travellers, couples, and anyone exhausted by peak-season tourism.

**Practical tip:** Call or email accommodation directly before booking to confirm they’re actually open. Don’t assume.
