# Poreč in February: Honest Thoughts
Look, February in Poreč is not the postcard version. It’s 9 degrees, frequently grey, and those 114mm of rain means you will almost certainly get rained on at some point during your trip. The Adriatic wind, the bura, can make it feel considerably colder than the thermometer suggests. Pack a proper jacket, not a light layer you’re hoping will do the job.
That said, the town itself is genuinely lovely in the off-season in a way that’s hard to appreciate when it’s heaving with summer tourists. The streets of the old peninsula are nearly empty. You can photograph the 6th-century Euphrasian Basilica, a genuine UNESCO World Heritage site with extraordinary Byzantine mosaics, without a single other person in the frame. You can actually stand and look at things rather than shuffle past them.
The honest reality on what’s open: the basilica stays open year-round, which is the main attraction anyway. Most restaurants are closed or running reduced hours, particularly the seafood places that exist primarily for summer trade. You’ll find a handful of konobas serving locals, and they’re usually better and cheaper for it. The seafront promenade walk is perfectly doable between rain showers and strangely atmospheric when it’s overcast.
Is it worth it? For a certain kind of traveller, genuinely yes. If you want history, quiet, and budget prices – accommodation runs a fraction of peak season costs – February makes real sense. Couples, solo travellers, or anyone who finds crowded summer tourism exhausting will find something appealing here. If you need beach weather and open bars, you will be deeply miserable. This is a town doing very little in February and not pretending otherwise.
**One practical tip:** Don’t rely on a hire car being easily available or cheap from smaller local operators in February – they often reduce their fleets significantly. Book in advance if you’re planning day trips to Pula or along the coast, because turning up expecting easy options won’t work the way it does in July.
