Visiting Tenerife in April
# Tenerife in April: What to Actually Expect
April is one of those months where Tenerife sits in an interesting middle ground, and whether you’ll love it depends entirely on what you’re after.
The weather is genuinely unpredictable in a way people don’t tell you beforehand. The south of the island – Playa de las Américas, Los Cristianos – will probably give you warm, sunny days somewhere in the low-to-mid twenties. Pleasant. Comfortable. Not scorching. The north, around Puerto de la Cruz, is a different story. It can be genuinely overcast and cooler, sometimes frustratingly so if you’ve packed optimistically. Rainfall is patchy and hard to forecast – you might get lucky all week, or you might get a couple of grey, drizzly days that nobody warned you about. The Atlantic doesn’t follow a script.
Crowds are manageable, which is genuinely one of April’s better qualities. Easter week is the major exception – if your dates overlap with Semana Santa, expect the island to fill up noticeably with Spanish mainland visitors. Outside of that window, it’s quieter than peak summer, prices are more reasonable, and you won’t be fighting for a sunlounger.
Everything is open. This isn’t a shoulder season in the traditional sense – Tenerife operates year-round, so restaurants, excursions, water parks, and boat trips are all running normally. Whale watching in April is actually excellent, which makes it worthwhile for anyone interested in something beyond beach-lying.
Is it worth going? If you want guaranteed roasting heat, honestly, wait until June or later. But if you want warmth without the July intensity, thinner crowds, reasonable prices, and a functioning resort destination, April works well. It particularly suits hikers – the temperatures for walking in Teide National Park or the Anaga mountains are far more comfortable than midsummer.
**Practical tip:** Book your south-facing accommodation. The microclimate difference between the island’s south and north is dramatic enough that it can genuinely make or break your trip depending on what you’re expecting. Don’t leave it to chance.
