Honestly? It depends entirely on what you’re expecting, and most people get that wrong.
Durrës is a working port city that also happens to have some genuinely remarkable history buried within it. The Roman amphitheatre is the real deal – second largest in the Balkans, partially excavated, sitting in the middle of a residential neighbourhood in a way that feels almost surreal. You’ll find Byzantine mosaics still intact inside it, a small chapel built into the structure, and almost nobody else there. For history people, that alone justifies the trip. The city walls, with their Roman foundations and Venetian additions, are scattered around town in a similarly unpolished way. Nobody is selling you the story aggressively. You just find it.
The archaeological museum is cheap and legitimately good, covering layers from Illyrian through Ottoman times without dumbing anything down.
Now for the honest part.
The beach is disappointing. Long, yes. Adriatic, yes. But Durrës beach is heavily developed with concrete hotel blocks, loud summer tourism infrastructure, and water quality that gives some people pause given the port proximity. If beaches are your primary reason for coming, go south. Himara, Ksamil, even Vlorë – all significantly better. Durrës beach feels like a Bulgarian resort from 2003 that never quite got the renovation.
The city centre itself is chaotic in ways that aren’t charming – just chaotic. Traffic, unfinished pavements, aggressive honking. It’s very much a functional Albanian city rather than a curated experience. Some travellers love that rawness. Others find it exhausting by afternoon.
The budget credentials are strong. Food is excellent value, accommodation is cheap, and getting there from Tirana costs almost nothing – 45 minutes by furgon, a few hundred lekë. That makes Durrës very easy to do as a day trip, which is probably the smartest approach.
**Verdict:** Go for the amphitheatre and the history, not the beach. As a day trip from Tirana it’s a solid yes – you’ll see something genuinely impressive, eat well, spend almost nothing, and understand Albania a little better for it. As a dedicated beach holiday destination, look elsewhere. The city rewards curious, low-expectation travellers and punishes anyone expecting polish. Come with the right frame and you’ll leave satisfied.
