Where to Stay in Durres

Where to Stay in Durres

Durres is one of Albania’s most visited coastal cities, and finding decent budget accommodation here is entirely doable if you know where to look. The city has a slightly chaotic energy, but that’s part of its charm, and staying in the right spot makes a real difference to your experience.

The beachfront strip along the main promenade is the obvious choice for first-time visitors. Hotels and guesthouses here put you within walking distance of the beach, restaurants, and the city’s modest nightlife scene. For budget travelers, smaller family-run guesthouses just one or two streets back from the seafront offer significantly lower rates than the hotels directly on the water, often for rooms that are perfectly clean and comfortable. You’re trading a sea view for savings, which is usually worth it.

The area around the old city and the Roman amphitheatre is worth considering if you want more character and slightly fewer tourists. Accommodation here tends to be basic, but prices are genuinely low and you’re close to the more interesting historical parts of Durres. It suits travelers who want to actually explore the city rather than just sit on the beach.

Avoid the far northern end of the beach strip. This area gets congested in summer, the accommodation quality is inconsistent, and some properties clearly haven’t been updated since the 1990s. The value simply isn’t there compared to other options.

For budget travelers specifically, look at guesthouses advertising rooms between 20 and 40 euros per night. These exist throughout the mid-town area and are best found on Booking.com or through direct inquiry once you arrive. Many owners will negotiate slightly if you’re staying more than two nights.

The single most common booking mistake people make in Durres is reserving accommodation during July and August without checking cancellation policies. The city gets genuinely busy in peak summer, prices spike, and some budget properties oversell rooms. Book somewhere with free cancellation, confirm your reservation a few days before arrival, and have a backup option identified just in case.
