# Kefalonia in October: The Honest Version

By October, Kefalonia has exhaled. The August madness – the queues for Myrtos beach, the packed tavernas, the boats full of sunburned strangers – has dissolved almost overnight, and what’s left is actually the island itself.

The weather sits around 19°C, which sounds perfect on paper and mostly is. You’ll get genuinely warm, sunny days where swimming feels completely reasonable and lunch outside is a pleasure rather than a sweaty endurance test. But October also brings that 45mm of rainfall, and it doesn’t arrive politely spread across the month. It tends to come in sudden, heavy bursts – a proper Mediterranean downpour that clears the sky for another four days of sunshine. You won’t bake, but you won’t freeze either. Pack a layer and something waterproof and stop worrying about it.

Crowds are genuinely thin now. Myrtos, which is frankly one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe, becomes something you can actually experience rather than survive. You might share it with a handful of people. That alone is worth the trip for anyone who visited in summer and felt slightly cheated by the reality versus the Instagram version.

What’s open is the honest catch. Some restaurants have shut for the season, certain boat trips have stopped running, and a few smaller villages feel genuinely quiet to the point of sparse. The main towns – Argostoli and Fiskardo – still have life, good food, and open bars. You won’t go hungry or bored, but you’re not getting the full menu of summer options.

October Kefalonia is ideal for hikers, couples, photographers, people who actually want to read a book on a beach, and anyone who finds high season tourism actively depressing. It’s not ideal for those who need a buzzing nightlife scene or want guaranteed beach days without interruption.

**Practical tip:** Rent a car immediately. With reduced bus services and quieter roads, October is genuinely the best month to drive this island, and the light on the hills is extraordinary.
