What was once a buzzing strip feels increasingly tired — half the venues are shuttered, the tourist-trap energy is thick, and the whole area carries the particular sadness of a resort town that peaked and hasn’t quite accepted it yet. Expect persistent hustle from taxi drivers, boat operators, and souvenir sellers. It rarely tips into aggressive, but it’s relentless enough to wear you down by day three.
The windsurfing and kitesurfing scene around Nabq Bay is genuinely good when conditions cooperate, and the luxury all-inclusive hotels deliver real value — your Egyptian pound goes far, pools are immaculate, and the year-round sunshine is exactly as advertised. If you want to check out entirely and lie somewhere warm and cheap in February, there are worse decisions.
**The honest disappointments?** Beyond the reef, there isn’t much authentic Egypt here. Sharm is essentially a hermetically sealed resort bubble with Egyptian staff but very little Egyptian culture. The food outside the hotels ranges from mediocre to genuinely bad. The beach areas outside resort property feel neglected. And if you’re hoping to explore, you’re largely looking at expensive, uninspiring day trips.
**The verdict:** Go specifically for the diving — it will likely be a highlight of your travelling life. Go for a cheap winter sun fix if your expectations are calibrated correctly. But if you want soul, texture, and real travel, Cairo or Dahab (just a few hours away and far more interesting) will serve you infinitely better.
