# Ischia in September: The Sweet Spot You’ve Been Sleeping On

Honestly, if someone asked me the best time to visit Ischia, I’d say September without hesitating. The island in August is a different creature entirely – packed, sweaty, and expensive in a way that makes you question your life choices. By September, something shifts.

The temperature sits around 23°C, which is genuinely pleasant rather than punishing. You can actually walk uphill to a restaurant without arriving looking like you’ve swum there. The sea is still warm from three months of summer sun, often hovering around 24-25°C, so swimming feels like a reward rather than a shock. That combination – comfortable air, warm water – is hard to argue with.

Rain clocks in at around 20mm across the month, usually arriving as brief, dramatic afternoon storms that clear quickly rather than grey days that ruin everything. Pack a light jacket. You’ll use it once, maybe twice.

Crowds drop noticeably after the first week of September once Italian summer holidays end. The thermal parks – Poseidon, Negombo, Castiglione – are still fully open and operating properly, but you’re no longer queuing for a sunbed. Restaurants have availability without booking three days ahead. The ferry from Naples feels like transport again rather than a contact sport.

Most things stay open through the whole month. October is when places start closing or reducing hours, so September gives you full access without the August chaos. It’s genuinely the island running at its best.

**Who is this for?** Couples, older travellers, anyone who finds peak season more stressful than enjoyable. Families with school-age children will mostly be gone after the first week, which either appeals to you or doesn’t.

**One practical tip:** Book your accommodation early despite the lighter crowds. Ischia has a loyal repeat-visitor base who book September specifically for these reasons. The good places fill up faster than you’d expect.

Worth it? Absolutely. September is Ischia being quietly excellent rather than loudly overcrowded.
