# Patmos in February: The Island Basically to Yourself

Look, February on Patmos is not beach weather. You know that, I know that. Eleven degrees with a decent chance of rain means you’re packing a proper jacket, not a swimsuit, and you’ll want something waterproof for the days when the Aegean decides to absolutely throw it down. The 50mm of rainfall across the month sounds manageable until it all arrives in two grey, horizontal days and you’re sitting in your accommodation wondering about your life choices.

But here’s the thing nobody on a tourism website will tell you: Patmos in February is quietly wonderful for the right person.

The crowds are essentially nonexistent. The Monastery of Saint John the Theologian, which in August has queues snaking down the hillside and selfie sticks everywhere, becomes genuinely contemplative. You can stand in the Cave of the Apocalypse and actually think about what you’re looking at rather than being shuffled through like luggage. The village of Chora, with its whitewashed walls and Byzantine atmosphere, feels like it belongs to you. Cats will find you. You will sit somewhere and feel the specific peace of an island that has momentarily remembered it’s a place rather than a product.

What’s open is the honest question. Several tavernas close entirely, and you might find your accommodation options limited to a handful of spots. The ones that do stay open often run reduced hours. You won’t be spoiled for choice at dinner, but what exists tends to be genuine, unfussy food served by people who aren’t completely exhausted from six months of tourist season.

Is it worth going? If you’re a certain kind of traveller — someone who came for the religious history, the walking, the light on the hills, the quietness — then February is genuinely brilliant. If you wanted a holiday holiday, wait until May.

**One practical tip:** Call your accommodation before booking to confirm they’re actually open that specific week. February schedules on small Greek islands are optimistic at best.
