# Istanbul in December: Honest Thoughts
Look, December in Istanbul is not the postcard version. It’s grey, it’s damp, and that 10.5°C feels colder than it sounds because the wind comes off the Bosphorus like it has a personal grudge against you. You’re looking at over 100mm of rain across the month, which means genuine wet days, not romantic drizzle. Pack accordingly or you’ll spend your first afternoon buying a terrible umbrella from a street vendor near the Grand Bazaar.
That said, there’s something genuinely atmospheric about the city in December that summer visitors never get to see.
The crowds thin out considerably. The Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, and Topkapi Palace are actually manageable. You can stand in front of Byzantine mosaics without someone’s selfie stick in your peripheral vision. Restaurants aren’t full by 7pm. The carpet shop guys are, honestly, a little less aggressive because they’re grateful for any foot traffic. The city feels like it belongs to itself again, which is worth something.
Almost everything stays open. Istanbul doesn’t really have an off-season in terms of closures – the major sites, the covered bazaars, the ferry routes, the food scene – all running normally. The Bosphorus cruise is bleaker but oddly beautiful. Warm tea in a çay bahçesi while rain hits the windows is not a bad afternoon.
**Is it worth it?** For history lovers, museum people, food obsessives, and anyone who finds summer crowds genuinely exhausting – yes, absolutely. For someone wanting beautiful outdoor photos in sunshine or planning to sit at rooftop bars – probably wait until May.
The Bazaar Quarter is particularly good this time of year. Spice market, warmth, colour, smells – it’s an antidote to grey skies and genuinely wonderful in winter.
**One practical tip:** Layer aggressively and bring waterproof shoes, not just water-resistant ones. The cobblestones around Sultanahmet collect water and your fashionable sneakers will be soaked within two hours. Wet feet will genuinely ruin your trip more than the rain itself.
