Visiting Izmir in May

# Izmir in May: What It’s Actually Like

May is genuinely one of the better months to show up in Izmir, and I say that as someone who’s also been there in August when the heat turns the whole city into a very attractive oven.

The weather sits in that comfortable sweet spot – typically mid-to-upper 20s Celsius, occasionally nudging 30 by late May. It’s warm enough to sit at a waterfront café on the Kordon for two hours without a jacket, but you’re not yet in survival mode. There’s some rainfall possible, particularly early in the month, but it tends to be brief and dramatic rather than the persistent grey drizzle that ruins a trip. Pack a light layer for evenings because the breeze off the bay has opinions.

Crowds are manageable. This isn’t peak summer chaos yet – the Aegean resort crowd hasn’t fully descended, and the city feels like it belongs to people who actually live there. The Kemeraltı bazaar, Agora ruins, and Kadifekale are all accessible without fighting through tour groups. Restaurants have space. It’s civilised.

Everything is open. That’s worth saying plainly because shoulder seasons in some cities mean half the good stuff is closed or running reduced hours. Not here. May in Izmir is fully operational.

**Is it worth visiting in May?** Honestly, yes – especially if you’re someone who likes good food and wandering without an agenda. Izmir rewards that approach. The city is secular, cosmopolitan, and genuinely enjoyable to just *be* in. It’s not a checklist destination. If you want relentless sightseeing, add a day trip to Ephesus and you’re sorted, but the city itself is the thing.

It suits independent travellers, couples, food-focused people, and anyone who finds Istanbul a bit exhausting and wants actual Aegean Turkey rather than the tourist performance of it.

**One practical tip:** the Kordon is lovely but obvious. Walk south toward Alsancak’s backstreets in the evening. That’s where you’ll actually eat well and spend almost nothing.
