Honestly, September might be the most sensible time to visit Peniscola, and it’s a bit of a shame more people haven’t figured that out yet.

The weather sits in that genuinely pleasant zone where summer hasn’t fully packed up and left. Expect warm days, typically somewhere in the mid-to-high twenties Celsius, though the fierce intensity of July and August starts easing off. You can actually walk around the old castle town without feeling like you’re being slowly cooked. Rainfall is unpredictable – you might get a few thundery afternoon downpours, which is fairly typical for this stretch of the Spanish Mediterranean coast in autumn, or you might get nothing at all. Pack a light layer and don’t obsess over it.

The crowds thin out noticeably after the first week, which transforms Peniscola from borderline insufferable to genuinely lovely. August sees the narrow streets of the old town absolutely rammed with Spanish families and tourists doing the same narrow shuffle through the same bottlenecks. By mid-September, you can actually stop and look at something without someone’s beach bag connecting with your elbow.

Most things remain open throughout September. Restaurants are still operating full menus, the castle is accessible, boat trips still run, and the beaches are perfectly swimmable. The sea temperature is often warmer in September than June because it’s had all summer to heat up. You’ll find parking dramatically easier and accommodation cheaper than peak weeks.

Late September sees some businesses starting to reduce hours or close for the season, so if you’re visiting toward the end of the month, just double-check anything specific you’re planning around.

This is genuinely ideal territory for couples, older travellers, or anyone who finds peak summer beach holidays more exhausting than relaxing. Families with school-age children obviously can’t play this card, but everyone else can.

**Practical tip:** The castle queue is essentially non-existent in September compared to August. Go in the morning, take your time, and don’t rush it.
