# Kefalonia in May: The Sweet Spot Nobody Talks About Enough
May is genuinely one of the best times to visit Kefalonia, and I’ll tell you why without overselling it.
The weather sits around 23°C, which sounds modest until you’re actually there. It’s warm enough to swim comfortably, eat outside every evening, and hike without feeling like you’re being slowly cooked. You’ll get occasional showers — roughly 20mm across the month — but these tend to be brief and dramatic rather than the grey all-day drizzle that ruins a trip. An afternoon storm rolls in, everything smells incredible, then it’s gone.
The island is awake but not overwhelmed. Tavernas are open, boat trips are running, rental cars are available. You can actually get a table at Tassia in Fiskardo without booking three weeks ahead, which in July would be optimistic thinking. The beaches — Myrtos, Antisamos, Xi — are accessible and genuinely beautiful without requiring you to arrive at 8am to claim a patch of sand. Myrtos especially hits differently when you’re not sharing it with a thousand people.
The water is cooler than August, sitting around 20-21°C. Some people find that refreshing, others find it sharp. You’ll acclimatise after five minutes, but worth knowing if you’re someone who eases in step by step.
Who should come in May? Couples, hikers, anyone who hates crowds, people who actually want to talk to locals rather than queue next to them. Families with young kids who need warm guaranteed sunshine might prefer June onwards when temperatures are more reliably hot. Same if beach life all day every day is your whole plan.
The island’s wildflowers are still going, the hills are green rather than scorched, and the light has this particular quality that photographers get excited about.
**One practical tip:** book your rental car before you arrive. May availability is better than summer but the island’s roads demand a car, supply is limited, and walking into an office hoping for one is a gamble you don’t need to take.
