# Korčula in October: The Honest Version

The tourists are gone. That’s the first thing you notice stepping off the ferry – the old town is actually walkable, the streets through that medieval maze belong to you in a way that simply doesn’t happen in July. There’s something almost eerie about having those stone alleys to yourself at dusk, the kind of quiet that reminds you these places exist for people who actually live here, not just for us.

The weather is genuinely pleasant rather than aggressively hot. Sixteen or seventeen degrees means you can walk for hours without melting, though you’ll want a decent jacket by evening when the temperature drops and the wind off the Adriatic starts making its presence felt. Expect around four or five rainy days spread across the month – usually moody morning showers that clear up rather than full washouts. Pack layers and something waterproof, but don’t panic about it.

Here’s the honest part about what’s open: less than you’d think. Many restaurants have closed entirely or shifted to skeleton hours by mid-October. The wine bars and konobas that survive tend to be the more local-facing ones, which is actually a good thing – you’ll eat better and pay less. Marco Polo’s supposed birthplace stays open. The town walls are accessible. But if you’re planning a big itinerary of boat trips and organised excursions, you’ll find the options significantly trimmed.

Is it worth it? Absolutely, for the right person. Solo travellers, couples, anyone who finds summer crowds genuinely exhausting, photographers, people who want to actually think – October Korčula is wonderful. Families expecting beach weather and full facilities might find it frustrating.

The one practical tip worth passing on: don’t assume the ferry schedules you found online are still running. October sees serious reductions on the Jadrolinija routes, and getting stuck or scrambling for a connection is a real possibility. Check the current timetable directly on their website within a week of travelling, not whenever you booked.

Go for the atmosphere. Manage expectations about everything else.
