Visiting Kos in March
Visiting Kos in March
# Kos in March: Honest Thoughts
Look, March in Kos is genuinely unpredictable, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling something. You can get gloriously sunny days where you’re sitting outside in a light jacket feeling smug, and you can get grey, drizzly stretches that make the shuttered tavernas feel a bit forlorn. Average temperatures hover around 14-16°C, which is pleasant enough for walking around but nobody’s idea of beach weather. Pack layers and just accept that the weather is going to do whatever it wants.
What March actually feels like is a town slowly waking up. The main resort strips around Kardamena and Tigaki are essentially hibernating – you’ll find maybe one bar open where there were thirty in August, and the handful of locals inside will clock you immediately as slightly lost. Kos Town itself is more functional, with enough year-round residents to keep some restaurants and cafes properly trading. It’s quiet though. Genuinely quiet.
That quietness is either the whole point or a dealbreaker depending on who you are. The ancient sites – the Asklepion, the ancient agora, the Castle of the Knights – are practically yours. You can stand in genuinely significant historical places without someone’s selfie stick in your peripheral vision, which feels almost radical these days. The landscapes are green from winter rain, wildflowers are starting to appear, and cycling the flat interior roads is actually enjoyable without summer’s brutal heat.
Is it worth going? If you’re a history or archaeology person, a cyclist, someone who actively enjoys off-season travel with its slight melancholy and cheap accommodation, then genuinely yes. If you’re hoping for beach days and lively evenings, honestly wait until May at the earliest. March will disappoint you and that’s not Kos’s fault.
**One practical tip:** Don’t assume restaurants are open just because they have lights on. Several places in Kos Town keep irregular hours in March, sometimes only opening evenings or only at weekends. Check Google Maps hours the morning before rather than arriving somewhere hungry at 7pm to a locked door.
