# Kotor in September: The Sweet Spot Nobody Talks About Enough

September is genuinely one of the better times to visit Kotor, and I’ll tell you why without the usual tourism fluff.

The weather sits around 25-26°C, which sounds perfect on paper, and mostly it is. You’re getting proper warm days without the brutal, suffocating heat of July and August when the bay essentially becomes a natural oven and the medieval walls trap every degree. That said, September brings noticeably more rain than summer – around 160mm across the month – so don’t pack exclusively sundresses and sandals. You’ll likely get several proper downpours, usually dramatic afternoon thunderstorms that roll in fast off the mountains. They rarely last all day, but they’re real.

Crowds drop meaningfully after the first week of September once European school holidays end. The cruise ships still dock – Kotor is firmly on the Mediterranean circuit – so mornings inside the Old Town can feel surprisingly busy, but by early afternoon those crowds evaporate back onto the ships. If you’re staying overnight rather than day-tripping, you get the town largely to yourself in the evenings, which is genuinely magical. Restaurants, bars and boat trips remain fully operational throughout September, and you won’t face the July misery of booking everything weeks ahead.

Is it worth visiting? For couples, slow travellers and anyone who wants atmosphere without suffering heat exhaustion while climbing the fortress walls, absolutely yes. Families with young kids do fine here too. If you want guaranteed beach weather and non-stop sunshine, the calendar is fighting you slightly.

The hiking and kayaking around the bay are arguably better in September than peak summer precisely because the temperature is manageable rather than punishing.

**One practical tip:** bring a compact rain jacket or small umbrella and just accept it’s coming. The people who get frustrated in September are the ones who packed for pure beach holiday. Accept one soaking afternoon, spend it in a konoba eating fresh fish, and honestly it becomes a highlight rather than a disaster.
