# Meteora in April: Honestly Worth It
April is genuinely one of the better times to visit Meteora, and I say that as someone who’s seen what the place looks like stuffed with July tourists. The crowds are building but haven’t gone completely mad yet. Early April feels almost peaceful by comparison – you’ll share viewpoints with maybe a dozen other people rather than fighting through selfie sticks. By late April, particularly Easter weekend (which often falls here), all bets are off. Greeks travel domestically for Orthodox Easter and the monasteries become genuinely hectic. Time your trip around that if crowds bother you.
The weather at 18°C is basically ideal for walking. You’re not sweating through the uphill climbs to the monasteries, which matters more than you’d think because some of those paths are steep and unforgiving. The 30mm of monthly rainfall sounds manageable, and mostly it is – you’re looking at occasional afternoon showers rather than persistent grey misery. What nobody tells you is that rain here is actually dramatic in the best way. Mist rolling through the rock formations at dawn looks genuinely otherworldly, better than any postcard. Pack a light waterproof and lean into it.
Almost everything is open in April. Six monasteries operate, though they each have their own closing days spread across the week, so you’ll need to check individually before showing up. Dress code is strict – no bare shoulders or knees, and they mean it. Villages like Kastraki and Kalambaka are fully running with restaurants and accommodation available, unlike the slightly sleepy situation in February.
Is it worth visiting then? Yes, particularly if you’re over 35, appreciate walking, and would rather think than queue. It suits photographers, hikers, and people who actually want to sit quietly inside a Byzantine monastery rather than experience it as a ticketed attraction.
**One practical tip:** Hire a car or scooter rather than relying on the tourist buses. The buses cluster everyone at the same viewpoints at the same time. Drive yourself and you can hit the northern viewpoints at 7am before anyone arrives. Completely different experience.
