Weather in January: Average high 7.9°C, 60mm rainfall.

# Ksamil in January: Pretty Much Just You and the Rain

Look, Ksamil in January is a completely different planet to the place you’ve seen in Instagram reels. Those turquoise waters and white pebble beaches exist, technically, but you’re experiencing them wrapped in a jacket with nobody else around and a decent chance of getting rained on.

Temperatures sit around 8°C, which isn’t brutal but feels rawer than that number suggests when the wind comes off the Ionian. You’re looking at roughly 60mm of rain across the month, so several genuinely wet days scattered through. The light is still beautiful in that pale winter way, and the water colour remains absurdly pretty even under grey skies. Just manage your expectations accordingly.

The crowds situation is almost comically reversed. In summer this tiny village gets absolutely overwhelmed. In January you’ll share the beach with some locals walking dogs and possibly a handful of other travellers who also decided to do Albania in the off-season. It’s genuinely peaceful in a way that feels earned.

What’s actually open is the honest problem. A good portion of restaurants and cafes are shuttered completely. The Albanian Riviera runs heavily seasonal, and Ksamil is one of the more extreme cases. You’ll find a few places open, enough to eat and drink fine, but don’t expect variety or your favourite spot from someone’s blog to be functioning.

**Is it worth going?** For the right person, genuinely yes. If you want to see Butrint archaeological site without queuing and in dramatic winter quiet, January is excellent for that. If you want to drive the riviera road without tourist traffic and feel like you’re discovering something, it works. If you’re hoping for beach days and buzzing atmosphere, just wait until May.

**One practical tip:** Don’t rely on finding accommodation open when you arrive. Book ahead even though it seems unnecessary given the empty village vibe. Several places don’t bother staffing reception without a confirmed booking, and you don’t want to be wandering around in January drizzle figuring that out the hard way.
