# Kyrenia in July: What You’re Actually Getting Into

Let me be straight with you: July in Kyrenia is hot. Properly hot. We’re talking mid-to-high 30s Celsius most days, the kind of heat that makes walking uphill to the castle feel like a personal punishment. Rainfall is essentially a non-event – you might see a brief shower if you’re particularly unlucky, but realistically the sky is relentlessly, blindingly blue for weeks at a stretch.

The harbour area, which is genuinely beautiful with its crusader castle and Ottoman tower, becomes a different place in July. It’s busy. Not unbearably so compared to somewhere like Dubrovnik or Santorini, but busy enough that the waterfront restaurants are filling up by 8pm and the narrow streets get clogged with families mid-morning. Northern Cyprus still flies slightly under the radar compared to the south, so the crowds are manageable rather than soul-destroying.

Everything is open. Every restaurant, every boat trip operator, every souvenir shop. Summer is the whole point here commercially, so you won’t find anywhere shuttered or seasonal menus stripped back. The beach clubs are in full swing, the harbour bars stay open late, and boat trips along the coast run daily.

Is it worth visiting? Honestly, it depends entirely on who you are. If you’re someone who genuinely loves that full-summer Mediterranean mode – beach, sea, late dinners, doing absolutely nothing productive – Kyrenia delivers this well and at noticeably lower prices than equivalent spots in Greece or Croatia. The old town has real character, the castle is fascinating, and the mountain road up to Bellapais Abbey offers some relief from the heat and spectacular views.

If heat makes you miserable or you wanted to actually walk around and sightsee comfortably, come in May or October instead. You’ll have a much better time.

**One practical tip:** Hire a car for at least one day. The coast stretches east and west with quieter beaches that the harbour crowds never reach, and finding your own spot makes a significant difference to the whole experience.
