Here’s the thing about October at Lake Como — it’s a bit of a gamble, and that’s actually part of why it works for certain people.

The weather is genuinely unpredictable. You might get crisp, golden days where the mountains reflect perfectly in the water and you feel like you’ve stumbled into a painting. You might also get three straight days of grey drizzle where the lake disappears into fog and you’re eating pasta indoors wondering why you didn’t go to Sicily. Both versions happen. Sometimes in the same week. Pack accordingly and don’t build your trip around outdoor certainty.

What October gets right is the crowds, or rather the lack of them. The summer hordes — the ones queuing ninety minutes for a ferry, clogging the narrow streets of Varenna and Bellagio — they’re mostly gone by mid-October. You can actually walk around. You can get a table at a decent restaurant without a reservation made three weeks in advance. The towns feel like towns again rather than open-air tourism processing facilities.

The trade-off is that things start closing. Some boat services run reduced schedules. Certain restaurants and hotels shut completely, particularly smaller family-run places that simply lock up after the season. Bellagio still has plenty open, but some of the smaller villages get noticeably quieter in ways that cross from peaceful into slightly hollow. Do a quick check before committing to a specific base.

The autumn colour on the hillsides, when the weather cooperates, is genuinely beautiful. Better than summer in some ways.

Is it worth it? For couples who don’t need beach weather and want the lake to feel romantic rather than chaotic, yes, absolutely. For families with kids expecting activities and sunshine, it’s riskier. For photographers, potentially brilliant. For anyone whose happiness depends on guaranteed warmth, go somewhere else.

**One practical tip:** Base yourself in Varenna rather than Bellagio. It’s quieter, cheaper, and the ferry connections are excellent. In October, that slower pace fits the season perfectly.
