# Larnaca in December: The Honest Version
Look, December in Larnaca is not the glossy turquoise-water experience you’re seeing on Instagram. Those photos were taken in July. What you’re actually getting is something quite different, and depending on what you want from a trip, that might be completely fine.
The weather is genuinely unpredictable. Some December days are mild and surprisingly pleasant, sitting around 17-19°C, perfect for walking around without sweating through your shirt. Others are grey, blustery, and properly cold in the evenings. Rain can appear with very little warning and hang around for days. You will not be swimming in the sea. Well, you could, but your body will have strong opinions about it.
What December does give you is a town that actually belongs to its residents again. The Salt Lake area, the promenade along Finikoudes, the little streets around the old Turkish quarter – you can wander these properly without navigating tourist traffic jams. Tavernas are open but quieter, which often means better service and owners who actually want to chat with you. Restaurant prices drop noticeably compared to peak season.
Larnaca Castle, the Byzantine church of Saint Lazarus, the Hala Sultan Tekke mosque by the lake – everything culturally interesting stays open. The Salt Lake itself can be genuinely beautiful in winter, especially if flamingos have arrived, which they typically do from around November onwards.
Who should go? Honestly, people who care more about atmosphere than beach time. Photographers, history enthusiasts, slow travellers, anyone wanting cheap flights and affordable accommodation, couples who’d rather have a romantic dinner than a packed beach bar. If you’re dragging children who desperately want a pool holiday, manage expectations hard before you book.
Is it worth it? Yes, but as a city break with occasional good weather, not a sun holiday.
**Practical tip:** Pack a proper rain jacket and layers, not just a light cardigan. The wind off the Mediterranean in December bites, and being cold and underprepared will genuinely ruin your mood faster than any grey sky will.
