# Lecce in September: Still Warm, Finally Breathable

If you visited Lecce in July or August, you’d understand why September feels like a gift. The savage heat that turns the city’s famous pale limestone into something resembling a very beautiful oven has finally backed off. At around 23°C you can actually walk those baroque streets without feeling like you’re being slowly cooked inside your own clothes. There’s occasional rain — maybe two or three showers across the whole month — but nothing that’ll derail your plans. Honestly, the weather in September is probably the best Lecce gets all year.

The crowds thin out noticeably after the first week. August in Lecce is chaotic — Italian families on holiday, tourists bussed in from the Adriatic coast resorts, everyone crammed into Piazza del Duomo at the same time. By mid-September the city exhales. You can actually linger in front of the Basilica di Santa Croce without someone’s wheeled suitcase threatening your ankles. Restaurants still have their full summer menus running, most shops are open, and the evening passeggiata feels genuinely local again rather than performative.

Everything you came to see is accessible. The Roman amphitheatre, the churches, the museums — all open and running normal hours. The surrounding Salento area is still warm enough for beach days if you want them, though the sea crowds have thinned considerably.

**Who is it worth it for?** Almost everyone, honestly. Couples, solo travellers, people who care about food and architecture without wanting to perform tourism alongside thousands of others. Families with slightly older children will manage fine. It’s not ideal if you need guaranteed guaranteed beach weather every single day — that’s more of a July certainty.

**One practical tip:** Book your restaurant tables in advance for Friday and Saturday evenings. Lecce fills up at weekends throughout September with Italian visitors doing short breaks, and the good places — the ones without laminated menus — still fill fast. A quick phone call or email the day before saves real frustration.

September is genuinely the sweet spot. Go then if you can.
