Visiting Mellieha in October
# Mellieħa in October: The Honest Take
October in Mellieħa is genuinely one of those months where you’re rolling the dice a little, and that’s actually part of its charm.
The weather is transitional in the most literal sense. Early October can still feel like summer – genuinely hot, 27 or 28 degrees, the kind of warmth that makes you feel smug about your timing. But by late October you might hit grey skies, that particular Mediterranean dampness, and the occasional downpour that arrives with absolutely no warning and disappears just as fast. Pack a light layer. You’ll probably never use it, but you’ll be glad it exists.
What changes dramatically is the atmosphere. The summer crowds – and Mellieħa Bay gets genuinely heaving in July and August, rowdy lidos, packed parasols, the whole circus – have largely dissolved. You can actually walk along the beach without negotiating a path through other people’s belongings. The town itself feels like it exhales in October. Locals reappear in the restaurants. You can get a table at a decent hour without planning three days in advance.
Most restaurants and bars are still open, though you’ll notice things thinning out as the month progresses. Some water sports operators have already packed up. The Splash and Fun water park closes for the season. But the Mellieħa Bay beach itself is free and accessible, and honestly more enjoyable without the August madness around it.
Is it worth visiting in October? For certain people, absolutely yes. If you want quieter streets, lower prices, and a more genuine sense of what the place actually is rather than what it becomes under tourist pressure, October delivers that. If you need guaranteed beach weather and a buzzing resort energy, you’re taking a risk.
The Popeye Village is still open and slightly less surreal with smaller crowds, which is worth knowing.
**One practical tip:** Hire a car for at least one day. October is perfect for driving up to the Marfa Ridge at dusk – the light on the water is extraordinary, and there’s almost nobody there.
