# Lisbon in June: What It’s Actually Like

June is when Lisbon shifts gears. The city is busy but not yet cooked alive by July and August, and that distinction matters more than you’d think.

That 24°C average feels pleasant on paper, and mostly it is. Mornings are genuinely lovely — cool enough to walk the hills without cursing your life choices, warm enough that you’re comfortable in a t-shirt by 10am. Afternoons push warmer than the average suggests, often hitting 28 or 29°C, particularly mid-month onward. The 9.7mm of rain is basically nothing; you might get one grey afternoon across a whole week. Pack a light layer for evenings near the river, which carry a breeze that catches people off guard.

The crowds are real. June isn’t the nightmare of August, but this is no longer shoulder season — that ship sailed around April. The Alfama viewpoints, particularly Portas do Sol, will have queues for the good spots. Pastéis de Belém will have a line out the door most mornings. Book accommodation and any decent restaurant you care about in advance. That said, the city is functional and navigable, unlike peak summer when it can feel genuinely overrun.

The big upside of June is the Festas de Lisboa, the city’s Santos Populares festival, which runs throughout the whole month and peaks around June 12th and 13th for Santo António. The streets of Alfama fill with grilled sardines, paper decorations, and actual Lisboetas celebrating something they genuinely care about. It’s one of the best times to visit, full stop.

Everything is open, hours are generous, and the long evenings — sunset around 9pm — give you a relaxed rhythm that shorter-day months can’t match.

**Is it worth it?** For couples, solo travellers comfortable in busier environments, and anyone interested in the festival? Absolutely yes. For people who hate crowds and heat, consider May instead.

**One practical tip:** Book a dinner reservation at any restaurant in Alfama for June 12th or 13th the moment you confirm your trip. You’ll thank yourself later.
