Speaking of which, the Biokovo Nature Park above town is spectacular but attempt any serious walking before 8am in August – the mountain has almost no shade and the heat becomes dangerous by mid-morning.

Is it worth it? For sociable people who like a beach holiday with real local life mixed in, absolutely yes. If you want quiet coves and restaurants where you can hear yourself think, genuinely consider late June or September instead.

**One practical tip:** Book accommodation with air conditioning and verify it actually works before confirming. Fans in August in Makarska are not sufficient – they just move hot air around your room at 2am while you question your travel decisions.
