Visiting Makarska in March

Weather in March: Average high 14.4°C, 129.7mm rainfall.

# Makarska in March: Pretty Quiet, Pretty Wet

Look, March in Makarska is not the postcard version. The town is essentially in hibernation, the Biokovo mountain behind it is doing that brooding grey thing, and there’s a decent chance you’ll spend at least a few of your days dodging rain. Nearly 130mm across the month means proper Mediterranean downpours, not just a light drizzle you can ignore. That said, 14 degrees with some sun between the showers is genuinely pleasant for walking, and the air smells incredible after rain against pine trees.

The crowds situation is simple: there basically aren’t any. The Riva promenade, which in July is elbow-to-elbow with people carrying ice cream, belongs almost entirely to locals walking their dogs. That’s either wonderful or a bit desolate depending on your personality. Most of the beach bars, tourist restaurants and watersports outfits are firmly shuttered. You’ll find a handful of year-round konobas serving honest grilled fish and cheap local wine, a bakery, a supermarket, and not much else competing for your attention.

Is it worth visiting? Honestly, yes, but only for specific people. If you want to hike Biokovo Nature Park without sweating through your clothes or fighting for parking, March is genuinely good for that on clear days. The mountain views when clouds lift are spectacular. If you’re after a slow, cheap city-break rhythm — coffee, walking the old streets, reading, maybe a day trip to Split which is an easy bus ride away — this works well. If you’re coming for beach life, nightlife, or expecting the full Croatian coastal experience, you’re going to feel like someone forgot to turn the town on.

Prices are significantly lower than peak season, which matters.

**One practical tip:** Check the Biokovo Park website before you go and build your hiking day around the forecast ruthlessly. Weather changes fast on that mountain, and the viewpoints in low cloud give you nothing. Pick your one clear day and go immediately.
