Visiting Mellieha in May

# Mellieħa in May: What It’s Actually Like

May is one of those months in Mellieħa where you feel like you’ve discovered a secret that everyone else is slowly starting to figure out. The summer crowds haven’t properly arrived yet, but the place has woken up from its quieter winter pace and genuinely feels alive.

**The weather is genuinely good, but bring a layer.** Most days you’re looking at warmth in the low-to-mid twenties Celsius, plenty of sunshine, and that particular blue sky that makes the bay look almost unreasonably photogenic. That said, May can throw a cooler, blustery day at you without much warning, and there’s a reasonable chance of a shower or two across the month. Nothing dramatic, nothing that should put you off, but packing a light waterproof isn’t paranoid.

The sea is swimmable for some people by May, especially later in the month, though water temperatures are still on the fresh side. If you’re hardy or from somewhere cold, you’ll love it. If you need bathwater-warm conditions, you might stand ankle-deep looking unconvinced.

**Crowds are manageable.** Mellieħa Bay gets busy in July and August in a way that turns the beach into a game of Tetris. In May you can actually find a spot, restaurants take walk-ins, and you’re not queuing for anything. The town itself is easy to move around, local businesses are open and operating normally, and you get a more honest version of the place rather than its tourist-season performance.

Popeye Village is running, the beaches are accessible, and most restaurants and accommodation options are functioning properly. It’s not a ghost town and it’s not overrun.

**Worth visiting?** Absolutely, particularly if you’re someone who wants pleasant weather without peak-season prices and patience-testing crowds. Families, couples, and older travellers who want to actually enjoy a meal without competing for tables will find May genuinely comfortable.

**One practical tip:** hire a car, even just for a day. The cliffs, the northern bays, and Ċirkewwa are all short drives away and completely transform what Mellieħa can offer you.
