Visiting Mellieha in April
# Mellieħa in April: What It’s Actually Like
Look, April in Mellieħa is genuinely one of those months where you could get lucky or you could spend half your trip in a slightly damp hoodie wondering where the Mediterranean sunshine went. Malta’s shoulder season is real, and April sits right in the middle of it.
The weather is genuinely unpredictable. You’ll probably get some warm, clear days where the light on the bay looks almost unreasonably beautiful and you’ll feel smug about avoiding August. You might also get grey stretches, cool evenings, and rain that arrives with zero warning. Pack layers. Don’t pack only linen.
What you will get is a Mellieħa that actually breathes. The town itself is quiet enough that you can sit in a village café and hear the conversation at the next table. Popeye Village is open and manageable. The Għadira Bay beach is largely yours — though the water will be cold enough that swimming is more of a “brave face” situation than a pleasure unless you’re genuinely hardy. The bay area has a windswept, slightly dramatic quality in early spring that some people find beautiful and others find just cold.
Most restaurants and accommodation are open, though a handful of the more seasonal places are still finding their feet in early April. You won’t struggle to eat well, but don’t expect everywhere to be firing on all cylinders yet. The hiking and walking around the Mellieħa ridge and down toward the red sand beach at Għajn Tuffieħa is genuinely excellent — wildflowers are still around, the landscape is green, and you’re not doing it in 35-degree heat.
Easter, if it falls in April, transforms the whole island. Mellieħa’s religious processions are worth seeing if you’re interested in that kind of thing, but book accommodation well in advance because Maltese families travel domestically for the holiday.
**Practical tip:** Rent a car. Mellieħa’s spread out, buses run infrequently to the surrounding areas, and having wheels means you can actually chase the good weather when it arrives.
Worth it? For walkers, culture-seekers, and crowd-avoiders, genuinely yes.
