# Olbia in May: What It’s Actually Like

So here’s the thing about Olbia in May – it’s genuinely one of the better times to show up, but probably not for the reasons the tourist sites will tell you.

The weather sits in that sweet spot where it’s properly warm, usually somewhere in the mid-to-upper twenties on good days, but hasn’t yet flipped into the relentless, suffocating heat that July and August bring. You’ll get sunshine most of the time, honestly more than you’d expect. Rain is possible, particularly in the early part of the month, and the odd shower can roll in from nowhere, but it’s rarely the kind that ruins things. Pack a light layer and move on.

What May actually feels like on the ground is a town waking up and stretching. Olbia itself is a working city, not a resort, which visitors sometimes forget. It’s a ferry port, a commercial hub, a place where Sardinians go about their lives regardless of whether you’re there or not. In May that energy feels good rather than chaotic. The Costa Smeralda crowd – the superyacht, designer sunglasses brigade – hasn’t descended yet, so you’re moving through places at actual human pace.

Most things are open by May. Restaurants, bars, boat trips, the archaeological museum which is genuinely worth your time. Beaches are accessible and largely uncrowded compared to what’s coming. Water temperatures are cool but swimmable if you’re not precious about it.

Is it worth visiting? Yes, especially if you’re using Olbia as a base to explore the surrounding area rather than treating it as a destination in itself. The Gallura region, the coast, the interior villages – May gives you access to all of it without the infrastructure groaning under tourist pressure.

It suits independent travellers, couples, anyone who likes having a café to themselves.

**One practical tip:** ferry and flight prices are rising fast by May, so book transport earlier than feels necessary. Accommodation in Olbia town itself stays reasonable, but wait too long and your options narrow quickly.
