# Nafplio in May: Worth the Trip
May is genuinely one of the better times to visit Nafplio, and I say that as someone who’s been there in August and nearly melted into the cobblestones.
At 23-24°C, the temperature is just right. Warm enough to sit at a harbour-side café in a t-shirt by lunchtime, cool enough that climbing up to Palamidi Fortress won’t feel like a medical emergency. You’ll want a light layer for evenings, when the sea breeze comes in and the temperature drops noticeably. The 20mm of rain across the month sounds like nothing, and it mostly is – expect a handful of brief afternoon showers rather than anything that ruins a day. Pack a light rain jacket more out of habit than necessity.
Crowds are present but manageable. Greek school groups start appearing, and European visitors are definitely arriving, but you’re not fighting through tour buses at Bourtzi or waiting for tables at dinner. The old town is actually walkable without constantly stepping around people, which matters because the streets are narrow and half the pleasure of Nafplio is wandering aimlessly through them. Everything is open – restaurants, boat trips to Bourtzi, the Archaeological Museum, day trips to Epidaurus and Mycenae. You’re getting the full menu without peak-season prices or noise.
The sea temperature sits around 18-19°C in May, which is genuinely cold for swimming. Greeks will mostly tell you it’s too early. Some northern Europeans will disagree loudly while turning slightly blue. Manage your expectations if beach time is central to your trip.
This is a particularly good month for couples, culture-focused travellers, and anyone who considers “peaceful evening in a beautiful place” to be a legitimate holiday activity. Families with young kids will enjoy it too. It’s less ideal if you need guaranteed beach weather or serious nightlife.
**Practical tip:** Book your Palamidi climb for early morning before 9am. The 999 steps are far more enjoyable before the sun hits them properly, and you’ll have the views largely to yourself.
