Visiting Neum in February

Visiting Neum in February

# Neum in February: Honest Thoughts

Let’s be straight with you — Neum in February is a bit of a gamble, and not necessarily the exciting kind.

The weather sits in that uncomfortable Mediterranean-ish winter zone that nobody really warns you about. Temperatures hover somewhere between 5 and 12 degrees Celsius most days, occasionally warmer if you catch a good run of sunshine, occasionally colder and wetter if you don’t. Rainfall is genuinely unpredictable. You might get three dry, crisp days that feel almost hopeful, then two days of grey drizzle that make the whole coastline look a bit forgotten. Pack layers and waterproof something.

As for the town itself, Neum in February is essentially hibernating. This tiny sliver of Bosnian coastline is already one of the smaller stops on the Adriatic circuit when it’s busy — in February it’s practically a ghost town. Most restaurants are closed or running skeleton hours. Shops cater mainly to locals passing through rather than visitors. The beach exists, technically, but you won’t be using it for swimming unless you’re absolutely committed to suffering.

That said, there’s something genuinely appealing about seeing a coastal town in its off-season skin. The views across the bay are still beautiful. The drive in through the mountains is dramatic regardless of month. You won’t be jostling with tour buses or waiting for anything. If you’re the type who finds abandoned seaside places atmospheric rather than depressing, you might actually enjoy it.

Who should visit in February? Honestly, mainly people already driving through — Neum sits on the main coastal route between Split and Dubrovnik, so you’re likely passing through anyway. Stopping for lunch and a walk makes sense. Planning your entire trip around it does not.

One practical tip: don’t assume the petrol stations or ATMs on the main strip are all operational. Check before you need them, because discovering something is closed when you’re relying on it adds an unnecessary edge to your day.

Come in summer if you want the full experience. Come in February only if you’re already there.
