Visiting Neum in January
# Neum in January: Bosnia’s Tiny Slice of Coast in Winter
Neum is already one of the more unusual places on the Adriatic — a narrow strip of Bosnian coastline sandwiched between Croatian territory, more of a geographical quirk than a proper resort town. In January, that strangeness deepens considerably.
The honest weather picture is murky. January on this part of the Dalmatian coast tends toward cool and grey, probably somewhere in the 5-10°C range, with the bora wind occasionally making things feel considerably harsher. Rainfall is genuinely unpredictable — you might get a run of mild, clear winter days where the light on the water is actually beautiful, or you might get a week of damp greyness. Nobody really knows, and anyone who tells you otherwise is guessing.
What you’ll actually find is a town that has essentially switched off. Neum’s economy runs almost entirely on summer tourism, and by January the place is skeletal. Most restaurants are shuttered, several hotels are closed entirely, and the handful of duty-free shops — which exist because of Bosnia’s different tax situation — are probably your best bet for anything resembling commercial activity. The beach is deserted in the way that’s either peaceful or bleak depending entirely on your mood.
Crowds are simply not a concern. You will have the waterfront to yourself.
Is it worth visiting? For most people, probably not as a destination in its own right. But if you’re passing through — driving the coastal route between Split and Dubrovnik — stopping for an hour makes complete sense. There’s something genuinely interesting about standing in Bosnia’s only coastal town when it’s quiet and unpretentious. A few local places do stay open year-round serving decent grilled fish and coffee.
For a certain kind of traveller — someone who likes off-season atmospheres, appreciates quiet, or is collecting genuinely obscure corners of Europe — January Neum has real charm.
**Practical tip:** Don’t plan your visit around eating. Check before you go whether specific restaurants are open, or bring your own provisions. The choice will be very thin.
