Visiting Olbia in November
# Olbia in November: What It’s Actually Like
Let’s be honest with you upfront: November in Olbia is a bit of a gamble, and anyone telling you otherwise is probably trying to sell you something.
The weather sits in genuinely unpredictable territory. You might land in cool, pleasant sunshine around 15-17°C with clear skies and that extraordinary Sardinian light that makes everything look slightly unreal. Or you might get lashed by rain for four days straight, with the kind of persistent Mediterranean downpours that render outdoor plans completely useless. There’s no reliable way to call it. Pack accordingly, and pack for both scenarios simultaneously.
What you won’t get is crowds. The tourist infrastructure largely shuts down after mid-October, and November finishes the job. Many restaurants on the waterfront are closed, some hotels are shuttered entirely, and the ferry connections to the mainland run on reduced schedules. This isn’t hidden – it’s just the reality of a destination built almost entirely around summer beach tourism. Olbia itself isn’t a deeply historic city with layers of year-round cultural life to sustain visitors through the quieter months. It’s a gateway town, and in November the gates are mostly closed.
That said, the old town centre still functions normally. There are genuine local restaurants open, the archaeological museum is worth a couple of hours, and the Sant’Antioco di Bisarcio church nearby is genuinely impressive. The surrounding Gallura landscape looks dramatic in autumn light, particularly if you’re willing to drive.
Is it worth visiting? For photographers, slow travellers, or people who actively like having places to themselves, there’s something real here. For anyone wanting the full Olbia experience – seafood on a terrace, boat trips, beach days – come back in May or June instead.
**One practical tip:** Don’t use Olbia as a base in November. Use it as your arrival and departure point, rent a car immediately, and stay somewhere inland like Aggius or Tempio Pausania, where there’s actual local life happening regardless of the season.
